[0:00] Revelation 14, I've got to be honest, I'm not looking forward to preaching on this passage. And that's not because I don't understand it, although there's lots of things in Revelation that I don't understand. [0:11] ! It's because I do understand it. And it's very stark, very clear, and very obvious. And it's something that we don't necessarily want to hear. John MacArthur shares with us a number of clippings in one of the books he's written, that he's collected from newspapers about churches in California. [0:31] There are reports of churches around the neighbourhood that he lives in. Let me give you a sample of them. There's no fire and brimstone here. No Bible thumping, just practical, witty messages. Services at this particular church have an informal feeling. [0:45] You want to hear people threatened with hell, or referred to as sinners. The goal is to make them feel welcome, or to drive them away. The sermons at this church are relevant, upbeat, and best of all, short. [0:57] You want to hear a lot of preaching about sin and damnation and hellfire? Preaching here? We like preaching that is sophisticated, urbane, and good and lethal. [1:11] It breaks all the stereotypes. Our pastor is preaching a very upbeat message. It's a salvationist message, but the idea is not so much being saved from the fires of hell, but being saved from meaningless and aimlessness in this life. [1:24] It's more of a soft sow. Now I want to say, if you go to any of those churches, you will not hear a sermon on Revelation 40. In fact, you can go to a church for a month of Sundays in America or the UK, and you can never hear anything about heaven or hell or judgment. [1:42] And I think many people in this country would go to church for an entire lifetime, and they'll never hear a sermon. Well, they may hear a sermon about heaven, but they'll never hear a sermon about hell or judgment. But the Bible teaches you and I that there is a heaven to be gained, and there is a hell to be spurned. [1:57] And although in this world, it's very difficult, isn't it, at times to tell those who are on their way to heaven and those who are on their way to hell, but there is a day coming when it will be all too obvious. [2:08] When there will be a day of reckoning and a day of judgment. When there will be a final harvest, a final separation. And that really is what this chapter is about. About heaven and hell. [2:20] And about the final harvest on earth. So those are my three points. Heaven, hell, and the final harvest. So first of all, John gives us a vision of heaven. Can you see that in verses 1 to 5? All the visions begin in the same way. [2:32] So verse 1, then I looked and beheld. Verse 6, then I looked and beheld. So it should be in verse 14, then I looked and beheld. Three visions. [2:42] And the first vision is the vision of the Lamb and its followers. Second verses 1 and 2. And I looked and beheld on Mount Zion stood the Lamb and with him 144,000 who had his name and his father's neighbour on their foreheads. [2:53] And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters, like Niagara falls and like the sound of loud thunder. And the voice I heard was like the sound of harpists, banjoists playing on their harps. [3:06] Now the JWs, they come and visit our spirit on a Monday morning. If you want to freak them out. When they come knocking on your door, tell them that you are one of the 144,000. I hope you do that. Because according to the JWs, the 144,000 are superior saints, aren't they? [3:21] Super saints. They are the elite. They are the elite who go to heaven, while the rest of the redeemed stay on earth. And if you're not redeemed, or in their way of thinking, if you're not a JW, then you will be annihilated. [3:32] Armageddon. That is their understanding. Thank you. Hal Lindsay, he wrote the late Greek planet Earth. I probably wrote some of you haven't read it. It's a load of rubbish. [3:43] But he said that the 144,000 were a band of Jewish evangelists that were left to evangelise the world after the church had kind of been ruptured, ruptured away. It's total nonsense. [3:57] Some of the Catholic commentators see the 144,000 as the religious. Verse 4, they are the virgins. They've taken a vow of celibacy. But that isn't, and you know it isn't right, if you know the book of Revelation, if you've been there the last few weeks. [4:12] The 144,000 by those with those views are viewed as a subset of God's people. A kind of elite. For the whole point of 144,000, as you see in the whole of the book of Revelation, is that they are 12 times 12 times 1,000. [4:27] That is, it's saying to you, they are the New Testament people of God, and the Old Testament people of God, they are all the people of God. They are the 12 tribes of Israel. They are the 12 apostles of the Lamb in the New Testament. [4:41] And they are all the saints of God in between and after. That is the way numbers are used in the book of Revelation. It's very obvious. The 144,000 is a picture of completeness. [4:52] The full complement of God's people. And they are with Jesus. They're with the Lamb. William Cowper has got a verse in one of his hymns that goes like this. Dear dying Lamb, thy precious blood will never lose its power till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more. [5:11] That's Revelation 14. That is what John has shown him, what he wants to show us. All the ransomed church of God are saved to sin no more. That is the picture. And he's not simply looking into the future. [5:22] It's very important that you see that. Remember what the writer Hebrews says. He says, You've come to Mount Zion. You've come to the innumerable company of angels. You've come to the mediator. To the blood of Jesus that speaks better things than the blood of Abel. [5:37] You have. As he comes to that reality, that's where you are tonight. You're there. You're glorified, in some sense. You're already seated with Christ, aren't you, in the heavenly realms? [5:47] Try and work out what that means in Ephesians. You're there. And John is showing that. And he wants to show that. That is your life. Your life is hid with Christ in God. That is the reality. [6:00] Whatever you're going to face this week, however beastly it is, however hellish it is, the reality is you're already seated in heavenly places. You're already on Mount Zion with the Lamb. Do you remember the context? [6:12] Revelation 13, all the beasts that are up there, on the sea, on the earth, they're rampaging right through the earth. Satan and his helpers, they are bent on world's domination. [6:23] Satan is intent on bringing people from every tribe and language, every part of the earth, to worship him. And at the very time that that is going on, there is an alternative reality. There is the Lamb and his followers. [6:35] It's what we sang about at the start of our series in Psalm 2. What you've got there is the nations, and the leaders, and kings of the earth, conspiring and plotting in vain. That is Revelation 13. [6:46] The kings of the earth, they take their stand. The rulers gather together, it's the Lord and his anointed one. Let us break their chains. Let us throw off their fetters. That's one reality, but the other reality is that the one enthroned in heaven, he laughs at them. [7:02] And he rebukes them in his anger, and he terrifies them in his wrath, saying, I have been stored by king on Zion, my holy hill. I will proclaim this decree. You are my son, and I have become your father. [7:14] I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron sepulch, and you will dash them like bits of pottery. And if you're wise, O king, says Psalm 2, be warned, O rulers of the earth, and you'll serve the Lord with fear, and you'll rejoice. [7:30] I'm telling you, you won't fight against him as king. In fact, you will run to the king, and you will kiss the son, lest he be angry, and he will be destroyed, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all, and take refuge in him. [7:42] There are two realities, aren't there in Psalm 2? On the one hand, you've got the nations of the world, conspiring against the Lord, and his anointed one. You've got the dragon and the beast, but at the same time, you've got the world of Revelation 14. [7:55] You've got the Lamb of Mount Zion, with all his people within, and right in the middle of them, of those redeemed, who worship the beast. You've got the community of the redeemed. Now the question that you've got to ask yourself is, how do I know where I belong? [8:09] How do I know where I belong? Everyone wants to think they're on their way to heaven. Lots of people just assume they're on their way to heaven, like anyone's assuming they're on their way to hell. [8:22] People will believe in heaven, won't they, but they won't believe in hell. So how do you know you belong? Am I on my way to heaven, or am I on my way to hell? Well actually, John gives us some indications in these verses. [8:34] He gives four or five marks. I want to give you three of them. Alright? One of them is this. A real follower of Jesus, as opposed to somebody who's following the beast, in verse four, will have a passion for Jesus. [8:47] It says, 144,000 who are redeemed from the earth. 144,000. It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins. [8:59] It is these who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been redeemed from mankind, as firstfruits for God and the Lamb. Now let me say this. The Bible is not arguing for celibacy. [9:09] Right? The Bible does not regard sex as something that is dirty, or raw, or defiling. On the contrary, read something about Song of Solomon. Song of Solomon. Not now. [9:20] Try reading it later. The writer of the Hebrews, Hebrews 13, verse four, tells us the marriage bed is undefiled. It's poor, it's good. Sex within the covenant of marriage is great. [9:32] Sex is God's gift. Sex is to be celebrated and enjoyed between husband and wife. There's nothing defiling or dirty about it at all. So we've got to use Scripture with Scripture. And we have to understand this in the light of the whole of the Bible. [9:46] And this is obviously symbolic language. There are two women in the book of Revelation, aren't there? And we'll come to that in chapter 17. But you've got two women. [9:56] You've got the whore of Babylon on the one hand, and the bride of Christ on the other. And you either go after the whore of Babylon, you're allured by the world, you call yourself a Christian, but actually it's the world you're going after, and you get seduced by the woman, or you are the bride of Christ. [10:12] Cut to her for Christ. I've tried to think of the little speech over this. This is the only way I can go on. It's not very good. It's a bit like sometimes. You know when the World Cup is on, and these crazy football managers will say to their teams, no sex with your wife, because there's a football game tomorrow. [10:29] Nobody makes the papers, doesn't it? No going out drinking all the time. No sex. No sex with your wife. Is that because it's wrong? No, it's not. It's not because it's wrong. On the contrary. [10:39] It's because you're focused on winning the World Cup. Yes. At that point. It's that sort of thing. For seeking all others, you take Jesus first. You choose him before all things. [10:54] And that is how you have to recognise if you're a Christian or not. Not if you come to church. But are you head over heels with the Lord Jesus Christ? To the extent where everything else comes second. [11:04] You've fallen in love. That is the picture of the followers of the Lamb. They are head over heels in love with Jesus. They are committed to him. They are passionate about him. And of course, it's highly symbolic language. [11:18] But it's simply a picture of passion. That real Christians have for the Lord Jesus. They want to live for him. They want their lives to be conformed to him. [11:30] Are you passionate about Jesus? Have you forgotten that you're in love with him? To the extent that actually everything falls into the background or everything serves that. Forsaking all others. I take him. [11:43] Although the world's glittering prizes are very alluring, you won't define yourself because you're passionate about Jesus. Another sign of belonging to God's people is the pursuit of holiness. And verse 4. [11:55] Verse 4. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. Wherever he goes. Verse 5. No lies found in their mouths. They are blaming us. [12:05] They follow the Lamb not whenever it suits them. There's an awful lot of Christianity like that about, isn't it? They follow the Lamb wherever it suits you. They follow him when it suits you. They mix and they match. They hop from church to church looking for things that suit them. [12:18] A real follower of Jesus will follow the Lamb wherever he goes. A disciple is a follower. Follow him. How can you tell if you're a Christian? Well, I am seeking to follow him. To follow him wherever he goes. [12:31] This is what John says in 1 John. We know that we love him if we keep his commands. Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus walked. So becoming a Christian is what? [12:43] Becoming a Christian is abandoning your own agenda And following Jesus Wherever he goes, take up the cross and follow me That is the essence of what it means to be a Christian To have a passion for Jesus And to pursue holiness So no lie was found in him in verse 5 They are blameless in the sense that they see through the lies of Satan And his helpers in chapter 13 They have not exchanged the truth of God for a lie who opens his wife On the contrary they see the lie of the devil And they hold to the truth They pursue the truth, they follow the Lamb wherever he goes And then the last mark before we move on Is that of triumphant praise, verses 2 and 3 And I heard a voice from heaven like the roar of many waters And like the sound of loud thunder The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their hearts And they were singing a new song Before the throne, before the four living creatures And before the elders No one could learn that song except that 144,000 who have been redeemed from the earth It's rare isn't it? [13:41] You find people that sing nowadays Some of them come to a wedding isn't it? They want to do a wedding I always say you've got to choose songs that people know There's no point choosing modern hymns Right? [13:53] At a wedding Because people don't know them They want a clue Isn't it? And they go to a funeral I took a funeral the other day Seven people there And they sang a bide with me I was doing a solo And then We did thine be the glory And the machine stopped And I literally was doing a solo But nobody else was singing And yet Christians One of the things that defines us Is we've got something to sing about Haven't we? [14:19] In Old Testament New songs celebrated new victories And what we're told Is the followers of the Lamb Is that they sing a new song In other words They've got something to sing about You only sing when you're winning They're celebrating a new victory The victory of Jesus Christ On Mount Zion on the cross And that is the message Of the book of Revelation Remember I said At the start A woman goes to her Sanctuary school class And she says What is the message of Revelation? [14:46] She says I'm going to clear with this little voice I know the message of Revelation What is it? The little voice says It's Jesus wins The Lamb wins And if you and I Are his followers We win with him And so we sing Because we're winning And that is something To sing about Doesn't it? [15:03] On a Monday morning When you're waiting for the bus There's a new song In our hearts And in our mouths Because he wins And we win with him If we bear his name So let me ask you Are you in these verses? [15:16] Are you on your way to heaven? Do you belong to Jesus? Do you bear his name? Are you passionately committed to him? Are you his bride? Are you flirting with the whore of Babylon? To use the graphic language of Revelation Do you follow him wherever he goes? [15:30] Are you picking to the bits that I like? The bits that I don't like? Renounce your own agenda to your life And hand it over your life Locked stock and barrel To the Lord Jesus And say it's yours Do what you want Rejoicing every day In his victory on the cross Do you wake up and thank God For what Jesus did on the cross? [15:50] That is the Christian That is the follower of Jesus So John is showing that here Two men up through prison bars One sees mud And one sees stars In chapter 30 if you like Is nothing but mud Is there? [16:06] But here in chapter 14 Is a different view This is reality For you if you're a Christian Not the mud But the stars You are already On Mount Zion You are already there With King Jesus You've come there Through faith in him So John is showing heaven And he wants us to see that tonight But he also gives us A glimpse of hell Look at verse 6 And I saw another angel Flying directly overhead With an eternal gospel To proclaim To those who dwell on earth Through every nation And tribe And language of people He said with a loud voice Fear God Give him glory Because the hour of his judgment Has come And worship him Who made heaven and earth The sea and the springs of water Another angel A second followed Saying Fallen Fallen is Babylon the great She who made all nations Drink a wine Of the passion Of her sexual immorality And another angel A third followed them Saying with a loud voice If anyone worships the beast In its image And receives a mark On his forehead Or his hand He will also drink the wine Of God's wrath Pour full strength Into the cup of his anger And he will be tormented [17:07] With fire and sulfur In the presence of the holy angels And in the presence of the Lamb Now I've got to say Emotionally I find that almost impossible You come here On a Sunday night And you listen to me And I prepare the talk Hopefully In a way that you can understand it But I've got to live with this passage All week And dig into it John Scott says this Emotionally I find the concept Of everlasting punishment Intolerable I don't know how people Live with it Without cauterising Their emotions Or cracking Into the string Francis Schaefer Was once asked In a public meeting You've probably heard this story He was asked A question In the university What about those Who've never heard the gospel And they waited for Schaefer To reply He was a great speaker He was a brilliant apologist He had a wonderful mind And they waited for him to answer Instead Schaefer bowed his head And he went Do you see the way [18:07] That hell is described Here I read it quickly But it defies The scripture The imagery is so awful Let me just pick out One little phrase That will help you To understand Do you see where he talks About drinking Of the wine Of God's very Full strength This time Sometimes People comfort themselves Don't they about hell If they think about it all They'll say Well life can be pretty hellish It was hell on earth And sometimes people say Don't talk to me about hell I'm living it now Some people Sometimes people say Well I've been through hell on earth I know what hell is I don't want to minimise And I don't want to trivialise People's suffering Maybe you're suffering But whatever Hellish experiences We suffer ourselves In this world Whatever Hellish experiences We see other people Go through Or that we witness [19:07] In our newspaper What we see on our TV screens The suffering The torment The pain The hellishness The injustice The horribleness There is always Something good in it In this world There is However bad it gets On this earth There's always Something there To mitigate it It's never Undiluted It's never full strength I don't know whether you read The reports Of what happened In Nairobi last week It was horrific Was it The siege People killed Moan down Hunted down Like rats That photo of a mother Covering her child Terrified And yet Beginning to emerge Are stories of Great heroism Aren't they This SAS guy Who kept going in To rescue people People who were Kind In the midst of What was horrific Tragedy Mercy Where people Shielded others You go to some [20:08] Terrible war somewhere Where people are Doing the most Unspeakable Unbearable Things Where people are Capable of such Cruelty You remember Bosnia Serbia Rwanda And how hellish It is And how Can anyone Do that Surely that is Hell But even there Well the Red Cross Are there aren't there Medicine Sans Frontier Are there There's always Someone trying To police it Trying to Restrain Evil There's The United Nations Always people Trying to Restrain it To do good And to bring Some mercy And kindness Into the situation That is always The case Even in the Most horrific Situation However Hellish it Gets in this Life It is never Full Strength It is always Deluted But imagine A society If you can Where every Hand that Restrains Evil Has been Removed Where every Hand that Does any Good Has been Taken Away Where even [21:08] The milk Of human Kindness Has dried Up And the Wrath of God is Undiluted That is Hell And that is Where the World is Heading And that is The message Of these Angels And that is What they Want us To see If you Want to Worship Peace If you Want to Go The way Of the World Then you Will Go The way Of the World And that Is The way The world Is going Babylon Is falling If you Want to Go with The world You will Perish With the World If you Want to Live Forever Cut off From the Source Of goodness Because that Is the Definition Of God Isn't it If you Don't want God In your Life Then you Won't have God In your Life God Think Think For goodness Sake What That Means You May Think You Haven't Got God In Your Life But you Do Even if You're Not A Christian God Causes the Rain To fall On the Just And the Unjust He Causes the Sun To shine On the Just And the Unjust You are Living In His World God And whether You Acknowledge [22:08] It Or not You are Experiencing His Kindness And His Blessings Every Day And if You are Determined Not to Have God In Your Life Then Hell Is Not to Have God In Your Life It's Living A World Where You're Cut Off From God Entirely And Completely It's A Very Stark Choice Isn't It But it's The Choice Before! [22:36] God Does Not Desire That For Anyone God Does Not Take Any Pleasure In The Death Of The Wicked How Do I Know That Because Of The Flying Angels Remember What Jesus Said In Mark 13 He Describes The End Of The World And He Says The End Is Not Yet First This Message Of The Kingdom Must Be Preached To All Nations That Is God Doesn't Want To Bring The End In Yet God's Heart Goes Out To People In Every Tribe And Language And Town People Who Have Not Yet Heard The Gospel That Is The Responsibility That He Lays Upon Us Those Of Us Who Know The Gospel It Is Urgent And We Are To Be Flying Angels With Loud Voices We Are To Proclaim This Ever Last Gospel To Every In [23:37] One Of His Poins Could A Mariner Sit Idly If He Heard The Drowning Cry Could A Doctor Sit In Comfort And Let His Patience Die Could A Fireman Sit Idle That Man Burn And Give No Hand Can You Sit At Ease In Zion With The World Around You Damned Use A Friendly Church It's Obscene There Is A Heaven To Be Gained And A To Be Shunned And My Final Point Is There Is A Final Harvest Still To Come And That Is Both Great News And Terrifying News I Wish It Not Better It Means There Is Still Time This 14 To 20 Describe The Final Harvest And It Does So In Two Very Vivid Pictures There Is The Grape Harvest And The Grain Harvest It's Not Describing Two Different Harvests But Two Think Of It As A Grain Harvest Or As A Trampling [24:37] Down Of The Grapes And Both Those Pictures Are Used In 14 To 20 The Grain Reference Probably It's A Reference To Harvest You Know All Are Safely Gathered In Air The Winter Storms Begin It's The Picture Of God Gathering His Elect People In His Arms 144 Thousand Bringing Them In The Followers Of The Everlasting Gospel Is Preached In The World So God Gathers His Followers For Himself That's What He's Doing Today And On The Final Day Those Of Scattered Throughout The World Will Be Gathered Safely In That Is The Picture God Will Eventually Separate His People Now The Wheat And The Tears They Grow Together We Can't Tell You Can't Always Tell Those Are On Their Way To Heaven And Those Are On Their Way To Hell But The Final Day Will Come When God Will Gather His People From Every Tribe And Nation And Gather Them Safely Home But There's Another Picture Here And It's A Shocker Isn't It It's The Picture Of The Great Harvest The Grapes Are Being Trampled Underfoot Until The Juice O Look at Verses 19 [25:37] And 20 So The Angel Swung His Sickle Across The Earth And Gathered The Great Harvest Of The Earth And Threw It Into The White Press Of The Wrath Of God The White Press Was Trodden Outside The City And Blood Flowed From The White Press As High As A Horse's Bridal For 184 Miles What That Is Saying They Would Know This They Would Say That That Is From Dan To Be Sheba It's The Length And Breadth Of The Land We Would Say From John O'Groats To Land's End The Whole Length And Breadth Of The Place The Whole Land Becomes A Lake Of Blood Up To The Nose Of Horse It's A Terrifying Picture It Is A Picture And Pictures Mean You Might Ask Why Is This Picture Here In The Bible What Are You Doing! [26:34] On Sunday Night! Listening!
